| ACTIVE | Enabling the knowledge powered enterprise | Europe is in transition to a knowledge economy and effective knowledge management is fundamental to successful economic activity. Still, enterprises find it hard to transform most of their essential tacit (implicit) knowledge into transferable, easily accessible, and actionable knowledge assets. ACTIVE aims to increase the productivity of knowledge workers in a pro-active, contextualised, yet easy and unobtrusive way. The aim is to convert tacit knowledge - the "hidden intelligence" of enterprises - into actionable knowledge to support collaboration and automated problem solving. A key aspect will be the support for informal procedural knowledge - the informal collaboration and problem-solving tasks that drive much knowledge work in the enterprise. |
| CALBC | Collaborative annotation of a large biomedical corpus | While it is universally acknowledged that annotating scientific literature with formal knowledge would make scientists more productive, these annotations are today very expensive to produce. CALBC's goal is to demonstrate that it is possible to bootstrap automatic (i.e. inexpensive) annotations of satisfactory quality by having a large number of annotation programs all annotate the same corpus in several iterations and improving their accuracy over time by learning from each other's strengths and mistakes. In order to do this CALBC will prepare an appropriately representative corpus of biomedical literature and construct a web based system that would allow any developer of biomedical text-mining applications to submit their annotation of the corpus, determine how this submission diverges from all the others and exploit this information to improve its performance. The final corpus, together with its final annotation (based on a consensus from all the individual submissions) will be made publicly available. |
| COIN | Collaboration and interoperability for networked enterprises | By 2020 enterprise collaboration and interoperability services will become an invisible, pervasive and self-adaptive knowledge and business utility at disposal of the European networked enterprises from any industrial sector and domain in order to rapidly set-up, efficiently manage and effectively operate different forms of business collaborations, from the most traditionally supply chains to the most advanced and dynamic business ecosystems. The mission of the Coin IP is to study, design, develop and prototype an open, self-adaptive, generic ICT integrated solution to support the above 2020 vision, starting from notable existing research results in the field of Enterprise Interoperability and Enterprise Collaboration. |

| Web4WeB | Web technologies for West Balkan countries | Web4WeB is a scientific project funded under the EC FP6. The mission of Web4WeB is to strengthen the West Balkan’s research body, industry and service providers in one of the most important areas of current computer technology – Semantic Web. The center of excellence that will emerge from the Web4WeB project, will concentrate its efforts around the outreach to West Balkan research body, coordination of research efforts in the region and outreach to Industry and to Education. |
| Wintel | Web INTelligence and E-Learning | This project covers some important aspects of Web Intelligence (WI) in the context of e-Learning. WI explores the fundamental roles as well as practical impacts of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced Information Technology (IT) on the next generation of Web-related products, systems, services, and activities. As a direction for scientific research and development, WI can be extremely beneficial for the field of e-Learning. Some of the key components of WI have already attracted e-Learning researchers for quite some time - ontologies, adaptivity and personalization, and agents. Other issues in WI, such as intelligent Web services, semantic markup, and Web mining, have only recently started to attract e-Learning professionals and researchers. The WINTEL project investigates how to use them as the basis for tackling new and challenging research problems in e-Learning. |

| ALVIS | Super-peer semantic search engine | The project will conduct research in the design, use and interoperability of topic-specific search engines with the goal of developing an open source prototype of a distributed, semantic-based search engine. Existing search engines provide poor foundation for semantic web operations, and are becoming vital access paths to the Internet.
Our approach is not the traditional Semantic Web approach with coded or semi-automatically extracted metadata, but rather an engine that can build on content through automatic analysis of free text. Linguistic processing will be inside the search engine and a probabilistic document model will provide a principled evaluation of relevance to complement existing standard authority scores. This will facilitate semantic retrieval and incorporate pre-existing domain ontologies using facilities for import and maintenance. The distributed design will be based on exposing search objects as resources, and on using implicit and automatically generated semantics (not ontologies) to distribute queries and merge results. Because semantic expressivity and interoperability are competing goals, developing a system that is both distributed and semantic-based is the key challenge: research will involve both the statistical and linguistic format of semantic internals, and determining the extent to which the semantic internals are exposed at the interface. The consortium assembles a team of leading international researchers from the areas of peer-to-peer computing (P2P), information extraction and search, and probabilistic modeling together with some of Europe's leading SMEs. The combination of design goals, the distributed operation and open source development have been chosen to support incremental growth, third-party involvement, low barrier to entry, and next generation knowledge services so it provides a foundation for European SMEs and be accepted internationally. | Completed |
| AXMEDIS | Automating Production of Cross Media Content for Multi-channel Distribution | AXMEDIS aims to meet the challenges of market demand by:
(i) reducing costs for content production and management by applying Artificial Intelligence techniques to content creation, representation (format) and workflow; (ii) reducing distribution and aggregation costs in order to increase accessibility with a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) platform at Business-to-Business (B2B) level, which can integrate content management systems and workflows; (iii) developing and providing new methods and tools for innovative and flexible Digital Rights Management (DRM), including the exploitation of MPEG-21 and overcoming its limitations, and supporting different business and transaction models. | Completed |
| AceMedia | Creating Intelligent Multimedia Content | AceMedia aims to create a framework, combining advances in knowledge, semantics and multimedia processing technologies, to support self-analysing, self-annotating, and self-adapting content. The main technological objectives of aceMedia are to discover and exploit knowledge inherent in multimedia content in order to make content more relevant to the user; to automate annotation at all levels; and to add functionality to ease content creation, transmission, search, access, consumption and re-use. | Completed |
| AgentLink | A Co-ordination Network for Agent-Based Computing | It provides support for the network of European researchers and developers with a common interest in agent technology through events aimed at industry outreach, and standardisation issues, as well as providing support for academic events and providing resources through the AgentLink Portal. | Completed |
