Web4WeB project

Web technologies for West Balkan countries

Web4WeB is a scientific project funded under the EC FP6 which lasts from April 2007 to October 2009. The mission of Web4WeB is to strengthen the West Balkan’s research body, industry and service providers in one of the most important areas of current computer technology – Semantic Web. The center of excellence that will emerge from the Web4WeB project, will concentrate its efforts around the outreach to West Balkan research body, coordination of research efforts in the region and outreach to Industry and to Education.

Web4WeB.org

Web4WeB.org is a portal on Semantic web Technologies. It contains information on latest advances, web resources, scientific projects, conferences, journals and institutions related to Semantic Web.

Besides that, portal contains information about Web4WeB project and its results. It will also contain brief descriptions of Semantic Web and other advanced Web technologies (web services, SOA, query languages, etc.) in local languages.

Web4WeB Workshop 2009 is a regional workshop on Semantic Web technologies. During the workshop Web4WeB team will give presentations on several topics from the field of Semantic Web and present results of the Web4WeB project. All sorts of stakeholders (researchers, students, IT professionals) from the West Balkan region are welcomed to register for the workshop. This includes ones that are already familiar with the Semantic Web field and those that are just starting to work in this field.

Please visit Web4WeB Workshop 09 for more information.

You can visit Web4WeB Workshop 08 for information about last year workshop.

Ontoprise has become a Microsoft Certified Partner

September 15, 2009

After last year’s strategic partnership between Microsoft and ontoprise (see press release from 05.09.2008) becoming a Microsoft Certified Partner was the next logical step for ontoprise. To become a Certified ISV partner ontoprise staff have had to prove their level of expertise and selected customer installations have been evaluated in detail.

The partnership with Microsoft offers ontoprise information on the latest technologies, development tools and best practices, and also provides a comprehensive support service. ontoprise customers will see benefits in two main ways. ontoprise semantic solutions can now be easily integrated into already existing Microsoft installations, which offers a higher level investment protection. On the other hand this partnership assures actuality, quality and continuity of ontoprise range of products and solutions.

SKOS become W3C Recommendation

August 18, 2009

Many knowledge organization systems, such as thesauri, taxonomies, classification schemes and subject heading systems, share a similar structure, and are used in similar applications. SKOS captures much of this similarity and makes it explicit, to enable data and technology sharing across diverse applications.

The SKOS data model provides a standard, low-cost migration path for porting existing knowledge organization systems to the Semantic Web. SKOS also provides a lightweight, intuitive language for developing and sharing new knowledge organization systems. It may be used on its own, or in combination with formal knowledge representation languages such as the Web Ontology language (OWL).

OntoBroker 5.3

July 29, 2009

The new OntoBroker 5.3 is the first SemanticWeb infrastructure which supports the Rule Interchange Format (RIF). RIF is a recommendation proposed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) for exchanging ontologies and rules between SemanticWeb applications. With this development ontoprise expands its technology leadership and offers the world's only infrastructure which fully supports the recommendations of the W3C for semantic technologies.

Ontoprise Semantic MediaWiki 1.4.4

July 29, 2009

Semantic MediaWiki+ (SMW+) is an open-source semantic wiki, targeted for use in commercial and corporate environments, allowing you to better manage and retrieve wiki contents, compared to conventional enterprise wikis. SMW+ provides an intuitive means for end-users to collaboratively create, organise and retrieve knowledge in your wiki. In this case knowledge is your semantically enriched wiki contents, which can be processed and interpreted by the wiki system and other ontology infrastructures. As a consequence, users are not restricted to a simple key word search for knowledge retrieval, but they are able to effectively query and evaluate the wiki’s knowledge base, giving them precisely the information they need. The contained semantics make the wiki context-aware: Thus, a query e.g. for wiki pages tagged with “event”, also yields pages only tagged with “conference”, because the wiki understands that every conference is an event.

Projects

Project Title Description
ACTIVEEnabling the knowledge powered enterpriseEurope is in transition to a knowledge economy and effective knowledge management is fundamental to successful economic activity. Still, enterprises find it hard to transform most of their essential tacit (implicit) knowledge into transferable, easily accessible, and actionable knowledge assets. ACTIVE aims to increase the productivity of knowledge workers in a pro-active, contextualised, yet easy and unobtrusive way. The aim is to convert tacit knowledge - the "hidden intelligence" of enterprises - into actionable knowledge to support collaboration and automated problem solving. A key aspect will be the support for informal procedural knowledge - the informal collaboration and problem-solving tasks that drive much knowledge work in the enterprise.
ALVISSuper-peer semantic search engineThe project will conduct research in the design, use and interoperability of topic-specific search engines with the goal of developing an open source prototype of a distributed, semantic-based search engine. Existing search engines provide poor foundation for semantic web operations, and are becoming vital access paths to the Internet.

Our approach is not the traditional Semantic Web approach with coded or semi-automatically extracted metadata, but rather an engine that can build on content through automatic analysis of free text. Linguistic processing will be inside the search engine and a probabilistic document model will provide a principled evaluation of relevance to complement existing standard authority scores. This will facilitate semantic retrieval and incorporate pre-existing domain ontologies using facilities for import and maintenance.

The distributed design will be based on exposing search objects as resources, and on using implicit and automatically generated semantics (not ontologies) to distribute queries and merge results. Because semantic expressivity and interoperability are competing goals, developing a system that is both distributed and semantic-based is the key challenge: research will involve both the statistical and linguistic format of semantic internals, and determining the extent to which the semantic internals are exposed at the interface. The consortium assembles a team of leading international researchers from the areas of peer-to-peer computing (P2P), information extraction and search, and probabilistic modeling together with some of Europe's leading SMEs.

The combination of design goals, the distributed operation and open source development have been chosen to support incremental growth, third-party involvement, low barrier to entry, and next generation knowledge services so it provides a foundation for European SMEs and be accepted internationally.
AXMEDISAutomating Production of Cross Media Content for Multi-channel DistributionAXMEDIS aims to meet the challenges of market demand by:

(i) reducing costs for content production and management by applying Artificial Intelligence techniques to content creation, representation (format) and workflow;

(ii) reducing distribution and aggregation costs in order to increase accessibility with a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) platform at Business-to-Business (B2B) level, which can integrate content management systems and workflows; (iii) developing and providing new methods and tools for innovative and flexible Digital Rights Management (DRM), including the exploitation of MPEG-21 and overcoming its limitations, and supporting different business and transaction models.
